In 2007 The University of Iceland’s Research Centre was founded in Húsavík and since then, researches have been directed and supported by the research centre. Each day a researcher is aboard whale watching boats gathering information about the different species encountered in the bay. Amount, location, and behavior of the animals are all details of interest to the researchers.
The researches are currently focused on the most common species encountered in Skjálfandi Bay: Humpback Whales, Blue Whales, Minke whales and the White-Beaked dolphins.
The Research Centre and the Húsavík Whale Museum have always been in a good collaboration. The researhers have enjoyed a working office in the museum‘s upper floor and more often than not their conclusions have been involved in the museum‘s exhibition rooms and/or at the whale congresses. Many of them have been a part time employees in the museum as well.
