The exhibition features the skeleton of a 25-meter-long blue whale that washed ashore on Skagi, between Húnaflói and Skagafjörður, in late summer 2010. The skeleton is displayed in a typical position, lying on its back, as is customary when whale carcasses naturally wash ashore. The blue whale, the largest mammal on Earth, can grow up to 30 meters long and weigh over 150 tons. The skeleton on display is from a female blue whale.
A series of images shows the process of pulling the carcass ashore, cleaning the bones in the whale station in Hvalfjörður.
