Whale Watching Boats are the Platform of Opportunity

Since 1998 the Húsavík Whale Museum has been carrying out independent research to learn more about the cetaceans of Skjálfandi Bay. The research includes photo-identification, dive time and habitat studies. The museum uses whale watching boats as platform of opportunity to collect data about whales, and dolphins spotted on these trips.

In 2007 The University of Iceland’s Research Centre was founded in Húsavík and since then, researches have been directed and supported by the Centre. Each day a researcher and/or a staff member from the museum is aboard whale watching boats gathering information about the different species encountered in the bay. Amount, location, and behavior of the animals are all details of interest to the researchers.

Our research is currently focused on the most common species encountered in Skjálfandi Bay: Humpback Whales, Blue Whales, Minke whales and the White-Beaked dolphins. Occasionally we are able to study other species such as Orcas and Northner Bottlenose Whale, when given the opportunity.
