Since the skeleton of a 25-meter-long sperm whale washed ashore on Skaga in 2010, the Whale Museum in Húsavík has lobbied for it to be cleaned and preserved. but also that it gets its place in the Whale Museum, among the skeletons of other whale species and with and with information about these largest creatures on earth. The frame was taken for cleaning and the museum has told the story of that process, i.a. otherwise in the current show.
It was yesterday, August 27, that the museum received an official letter from the Ministry of Education and Culture announcing that the frame will be brought to the north for safekeeping for an indefinite period. Work will be done on further developments regarding the transfer and contract period in the coming days.
This is of course good news for the museum and society as a whole, and the staff of the Whale Museum would like to express their thanks to all those who have put their hands to the plow and come to work on this phase.
It can therefore be said that there is a lot of construction time ahead, but the current exhibitions and exhibition space of the museum will be changed in order to accommodate this impressive new exhibit.
