Agreement between the Whale Museum in Húsavík SES and the Ministry of Education and Culture
On March 12, 2013, the director of the Whale Museum, on behalf of the board, and Katrín Jakobsdóttir, the then Minister of Education and Culture, signed a three-year agreement for the ministry to pay an annual contribution to the Whale Museum with the main goal of:

  • Support the operation of an educational center and museum about whales and their habitat,
  • support research on whales off Iceland without harming them
  • promote the sharing of information about the history of whaling and whale watching in Iceland.

The whale museum is a recognized museum

In 2014, the Whale Museum in Húsavík was recognized by the Minister of Education as a recognized museum, on the recommendation of the Museum Council. Accredited museums must operate in accordance with the provisions of the Museums Act, and the Swedish Museums Council is responsible for supervising museum activities in the country.
