Today, a new exhibition about the history of whaling and the history of whale watching off Iceland was officially opened. It was the president of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson who inaugurated the exhibition, but he is here on an official visit to Norðurþing.
The designer of the exhibition is Þórarinn Blöndal, but he also worked on the installation of the cast iron exhibition. In addition to the museum's staff, many people put their hands to work on setting up the exhibition. The exhibition presents the history of whaling on the coast of Iceland, a new history of whale watching and a vision of the future related to the possible protection of marine areas. Dr. Marianne Rasmussen and the Research Center of the University of Iceland in Húsavík contributed material related to research on whales in Skjálfanda Bay. Pétur Jónasson, a photographer, edited the exhibition's images, Guðmundur Örn Benediktsson edited the text, Erich Hoyt, a whale expert from Great Britain, read the English text about whale watching, and Gísli Víkingsson from the Norwegian Maritime Research Institute assisted with text work. Gestur Halldórsson, a former killer whale, contributed a whaling gun to the exhibition. The Whale Museum would like to thank everyone who contributed to the exhibition
