Attendance at the Whale Museum in Húsavík this summer was higher than expected, with just over 11.500 visitors visiting the museum in June, July and August. That is well over a third of the number who visited the museum during the same months in 2019. When the Covid 19 epidemic was at its peak last spring, it had been assumed that visitors would be 10-20% of what it would be in a normal year. Icelanders visited the museum to a much greater extent than had been expected, but they counted around 4500 or over 39% of the number of visitors. The Germans were the most numerous of the visiting nations, but on the whole it can be said that the visits of foreign tourists after June 15 were more than previously expected.
The staff of the Whale Museum would like to express their thanks to all those who visited the museum this summer.
We are now accepting winter projects from the staff of the Whale Museum. They are quite diverse and include various types of maintenance, educational work and more. The pandemic will continue to have a say in the fate of some projects, but hopefully it will be revealed in the second half of that battle.
The whale museum is open this week from 11-17, but the opening hours will change as follows:
Mondays-Fridays: 11-15
Saturdays-Sundays: 11-17
